Street photography is a popular form of documentary photography. This form of photography is as popular in India as it is in Europe, America and Australia. A large number of photographic artists in India practice this form of photography and the trend has created some of the classics in the history of Indian photography. The advent of modern cameras with added technological features has contributed much to the acceptance of street photography world wide.

Years between 1890 and 1975 are supposed to be the golden period of street photography. During these years, a large number of classic works were created. It is only during these periods when different portable cameras were introduced. In this regard, the invention of small 35 mm camera deserves special mention. The period has also produced some of the classic practitioners of street photography.
